2021 College Scholarship Gary DellaPosta, CPA & Business Advisors are pleased to announce our 2021 Scholarship for entering college juniors. We will be awarding $1000 to a qualified local student. To qualify, you must be from Falmouth, Bourne, Mashpee or Sandwich and entering your junior year in 2021. Applicant must be enrolled in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in a business degree field at an accredited college or university. Applicants are invited to download the application off of our website or contact us directly to receive a copy. All applications are due June 1, 2020 and a winner will be announced on July 1, 2021. The winner and their family will be invited to attend a luncheon to receive their honors. 2020 College Scholarship Winners Each summer, the office of Gary DellaPosta, CPA awards a college scholarship to a deserving student from Upper Cape Cod who is majoring in a business related program. Now in our 5th year of scholarships it has become apparent how truly talented and dedicated many of our local students are. This year the quality of the applicants was exceptional making deliberations difficult. Due to the caliber of our applicants in addition to the current stressful times we have decided to award 4 scholarships for 2020. We are pleased to announce Brennan McIntyre from Bourne as the winner of the 2020 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Brennan is majoring in Business Management & Psychology at Wheaton College. We are also pleased to award $500 scholarships to the following applicants: Caitlin Furlani from Sandwich majoring in Business at Babson College Ian Melkonian from Falmouth majoring in Business Management at Suffolk University Owen Smith from Falmouth majoring in Sports Management at Nichols College Stay tuned for our upcoming announcements and bios on each student. Brennan McIntyre 2020 $1000 Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Brennan McIntyre from Bourne as the winner of the 2020 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Brennan is a rising College Junior, majoring in Business Management & Psychology at Wheaton College. Brennan was the grand prize winner of 4 local students selected this year to receive a 2020 scholarship. While in school Brennan discovered that he excelled in an accounting class taught by Wheaton College President, Dennis Hanno which now has him wanting to pursue a 5th year accounting program at Northeastern University. Brennan is described by his teachers as having a strong work ethic, a solid grasp of concepts, a drive to succeed and the courage to overcome challenges. Due to his dedication to his academics, Brennan was invited to be a member of the May Fellow Scholars Program, a community of intellectually curious students. Brennan is an athlete playing defense and midfield for Wheaton College Lacrosse team as well as freestyle sprinter for the college swim team. Brennan began playing the trombone at 10 years old and now is the 1st Trombone in the Great Woods Symphony Orchestra. This winter he wanted to find a new hobby so he taught himself to play the piano. He currently works for the Ocean Spray plant in Middleboro doing machine maintenance and sanitation. Caitlin Furlani 2020 $500 Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Caitlin Furlani from Sandwich one of the $500 scholarship winners of the 2020 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship. This year the quality of the applicants was exceptional making deliberations difficult. Due to the caliber of our applicants in addition to the current stressful times our office decided to award 4 scholarships for 2020. Caitlin is a rising College Junior, majoring in Business with a concentration in Finance at Babson College. Upon starting her higher education classes Caitlin discovered how much she enjoyed math and courses that challenged her. She decided to take a risk and purse a degree in business finding that her excelled at the courses and having enjoyed working with the Glass Studio in Sandwich. Her professors describe her as a hard worker with an adept understanding of managerial accounting even mastering difficult concepts with ease during the disruption of courses due to COVID. Caitlin founded her own business as part of a course all students at Babson are required to take. She now serves as a mentor for both this class and the Babson summer high school program. Caitlin is also active on the college rugby team having tried it for the first time her freshman year. She recently joined leadership roles on Babson's campus, including Peers on Wellness (POW), Hearing Board, and College Advancement Ambassador (CAA). This summer she was selected to intern at Fidelity Investments as an Asset Management Risk Intern. Caitlin is very passionate about community service. She started volunteering in her town at a young age, and credits this experience in shaping the worker she is today. Since then, she has had the opportunity to volunteer with various organizations, such as Cape Cod Wildlife Center, as well as attend service immersion trips through Babson College for Habitat for Humanity. Dr. Luippold at Babson shares that, “Caitlin is out to do good and make people’s lives better.” Caitlin is a true asset to the community and we are extremely pleased to offer her this scholarship. Owen Smith 2020 $500 Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Owen Smith from Falmouth, as one of the $500 scholarship winners of the 2020 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship. This year the quality of the applicants was exceptional making deliberations difficult. Due to the caliber of our applicants in addition to the current stressful times our office decided to award 4 scholarships for 2020. Owen is a rising College Junior, majoring in Sports Management with a minor in marketing at Nichols College. Owen is an Honors student and a member of the Nichols Emerging Leaders Program as well as other College Honor and Leadership Societies. He is described as a high performing and a likeable student by his professor. “I have been especially impressed by Owen’s motivation and desire to succeed not only in his scholastic endeavors, but also in in all aspects of his life.” Owen is a problem solver and a leader, who has made a commitment to remaining sober and drug free throughout his college years, choosing to focus his time on his studies and also working to contribute to his own higher education costs. Owen is an Eagle Scout who created an obstacle course for the Town of Falmouth's Commission on Disabilities for the town's 2018 Public Health and Wellness Fair, and the course demonstrated what it was like to live with a disability. Owen has worked since 2016 for the Town of Falmouth within the Falmouth Harbormasters Office as a Waterways Assistant. Ian Melkonian 2020 $500 Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Ian Melkonian from Falmouth, as one of the $500 scholarship winners of the 2020 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship. This year the quality of the applicants was exceptional making deliberations difficult. Due to the caliber of our applicants in addition to the current stressful times our office decided to award 4 scholarships for 2020. Ian is a rising College Junior, majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Finance at Suffolk University. Ian is an Honors student having made Dean’s list both his freshman and sophomore years. He was selected to the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society as a member of the top 10% of Sawyer Business School students as well as selected to The National Society of Leadership & Success. He is described as an open-minded student with integrity, strong work ethic and character by his professor. Ian was one of ten top finance students at Suffolk University who was selected to go on Suffolk's inaugural experiential learning trip to Wall Street where they spoke with top leaders in the financial world and got to witness the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. His employer also describes him as a remarkable young man who exceeds expectations. Ian is a hard worker and a leader, who has also made a commitment to remaining drug and smoke free. Additionally, he founded the Finance Club at Suffolk University and has even started his own business, IGM Industries, while in high school to help pay for his own higher education costs. Having faced adversity after losing his mother when he was young, his father was a tremendous role model for him teaching him compassion and dedication to others. This has led him to be passionate about volunteerism within his community growing up as well as at Suffolk University. He has volunteered with the Falmouth Service Center, Falmouth Youth Baseball, the Road Race, Skate for Change to benefit the homeless, Relay for Life, Light the Night for Leukemia and so much more Ian is a true asset to the community, and we are extremely pleased to offer him this scholarship. 2019 College Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Arianna Breen as the winner of the 2019 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Arianna is a local Sandwich resident who attended Sandwich High School, graduating in 2017. Arianna made a valuable and financially wise choice to conserve her savings and begin her college education locally at Cape Cod Community College. She then transferred to Boston College and the Carroll School of Management. She has excelled in her studies at Boston while pursuing a major in Finance. She has received excellent grades in her business classes, earning a 4.0 Spring GPA and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.95. Her professors at Boston College both described her as being attentive, insightful and offering accurate insights into the coursework. Both were very impressed by her motivation to learn and her leadership skills. In addition Arianna is spending the summer interning at Cape Cod Five Savings Bank as a Residential & Consumer Lending intern. She has also worked at both Sunglass Hut & Café Riverview in Sandwich. She is active at school in the Consulting Club, Women in Business and Greek Club. 2018 College Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Hannah Ghelfi as the winner of the 2018 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Hannah is a local Falmouth resident who attended both Falmouth High School and Lawrence Academy, graduating in 2016. She has excelled in her studies at the University of Michigan and within the Ross School of Business while pursuing a concentration in business economics and consulting. She has received excellent grades in her business classes, received university honors for two years, and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.4 while enrolled in the Business School. In addition, Hannah also plays Division 1 golf and is a student ambassador. This past year Hannah was honored as the winner of the annual Anne Marie Tobin Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts Player of the Year, becoming only the second Cape Codder in seven years to win this award. 2017 College Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Ian McKenna as the winner of the 2016 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Ian is a local 2015 Sturgis Charter High School graduate who has excelled in his studies at Champlain College in Vermont while majoring in Accounting. He has received excellent grades in his accounting classes, has been named to the Dean’s List several times, earned the Accounting Excellence Scholarship from Champlain College, and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.77. Ian plans to pursue a career as a Certified Public Accountant having been inspired by an accounting professor describing accounting as the “mechanics of business,” while working a job at a local gas station. His parents, Michael & Susan McKenna of Sandwich, both work fulltime and are supportive of his education. This past tax season, Ian worked as an intern at American Tax in Burlington, VT gaining the confidence of his boss who stated that it was “clear that his work ethic and abilities surpassed his age and experience.” This summer Ian is working for the Town of Sandwich Recreation Department while also working at a mechanic station on the weekends, taking two college classes and restoring two cars. He plans to take advantage of a study abroad opportunity in Ireland that will include an internship in accounting for his junior year. In addition to working and going to school, Ian is also a Senior Peer Advisor with Champlain College’s LEAD program designed to promote lifelong career management, volunteerism and financial sophistication. Ian has demonstrated passion and dedication to his studies, his jobs, and his volunteerism. It is because of his strong work ethic that proves just how far in life this young man will go. 2016 College Scholarship Winner We are pleased to announce Jacquelyn Grinnell as the winner of the 2016 Gary DellaPosta, CPA Business Scholarship for $1,000. Jacquelyn is a local 2014 Falmouth High School graduate who has excelled in her studies at University of New Hampshire while majoring in Business Administration Accounting and Marketing. She has received excellent grades in her accounting classes, has earned high honors twice and currently holds a cumulative GPA of 3.58. Jacquelyn is a first generation college student in her family attending the University of New Hampshire. Her parents Robert & Nanette both work within our community and her younger brother, Robert attends Lawrence Jr. High School. She has grown up learning that nothing is handed to you in the real world and that one must work hard for what you want in life. As a result she has paid her own way through college working full time as a manager in the summer in Falmouth at Jimmy’s of Woods Hole and the Surf Drive Snack Bar. She is a valued employee who is trusted to help operate the business responsibly and takes ownership of her job. She also works at the Dimond Library at the college during the school year. In addition to working and going to school, Jacquelyn also volunteers at a therapeutic art club. Jacquelyn has demonstrated passion and dedication to her studies, her job, her family and to our community. It is because of her strong work ethic and devotion to her all these that proves just how far in life this young woman will go.
